Nearly six months ago I added a 10kWh LiFePO4 battery to my rooftop solar system, mainly because our evening electricity use was wiping out the benefit of sunny afternoons.
Setup was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in my garage, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and set a 20% backup reserve. I chose time-of-use mode, so it charges from solar during the day and runs the house after the utility’s peak period begins. I had seen the phrase "untersitz lifepo4" online while comparing LiFePO4 battery listings, but I cared more about warranty support and usable capacity than the wording.
The first week taught me to adjust expectations. On cloudy days, the battery sometimes reached only 55%, so I changed the reserve to 30% and stopped running the clothes dryer at night. On a normal sunny day, though, the battery filled by about 2:30 p.m. and carried our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and evening cooking without pulling much from the grid.
The clearest difference shows up on the bill. Before storage, our peak-hour usage averaged roughly 8–10 kWh a day. After installation, it is usually 1–3 kWh, depending on weather. My monthly bill fell from about $185 to about $112 during the first comparable month. That is not a perfect saving because rates changed, but the evening peak charge clearly shrank.
I did have one minor scare. The battery stopped discharging at 42% during a heat wave. The app showed a temperature warning, and the garage was hotter than usual. I cleared leaves around the ventilation area, restarted the inverter, and it resumed later.
Since then, I check the battery temperature, keep the vents clear, and let the system prioritize self-consumption over chasing every last kilowatt-hour. But for my home, that small routine feels worthwhile.
