Every evening, I glance at my solar battery app before I start dinner. Last summer, I added a tesla home battery to the solar panels on my roof, mainly because our utility’s peak rates begin at 4 p.m. I was tired of watching the meter spin fastest while we were cooking, running the dishwasher, and turning on the air conditioner.
The biggest difference has been shifting that expensive usage. On a sunny day, the panels charge the battery by midafternoon. Around 4 p.m., the system stops pulling from the grid and quietly supplies the house from stored solar energy. I usually notice the savings more on the monthly bill than in the house itself. My average summer bill fell from about $210 to $125, although weather and our habits obviously change from month to month. The battery does not make electricity free, but it has made our evening solar power much more useful.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery sat at 100 percent and refused to discharge during peak hours. I checked the app and found that backup reserve had somehow been set to 100 percent. That setting was protecting the capacity for an outage, so the system behaved exactly as configured. I lowered the reserve to 20 percent, and discharge resumed that evening. I felt foolish, but I appreciated not needing a service call.
Now I keep the reserve at 30 percent because our neighborhood has occasional outages. During normal days, the solar-plus-storage setup covers most of our dinner and evening loads. I still buy grid power overnight and on cloudy days, but the battery has reduced those costly peak-hour purchases. For me, the best feature is not independence; it is making the energy I generate at noon work harder after sunset.
