Using my solar battery after six months, the biggest surprise has been how much quieter my evenings feel financially. I paired a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery with a sungrow hybrid inverter, and the setup was less intimidating than I expected.
The installer mounted the battery in my garage, connected it to the existing rooftop solar array, and programmed it to charge during sunny hours. I chose a reserve level of 25%, so there’s still backup capacity if the grid fails. On the first evening, I watched the app as the house switched from grid power to stored energy just after sunset. It felt oddly satisfying seeing the meter stop climbing during dinner and laundry.
Before the battery, our utility bill jumped because our time-of-use rate was highest from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. In the first full month, our bill dropped by about $68, even though we had several cloudy days. The following month saved nearly $82, mainly because I shifted dishwasher runs and water heating into the solar charging window. That change matters more than the app’s impressive daily graphs.
There was one minor hiccup. After a firmware update, the inverter stopped exporting excess solar for an afternoon. The battery still charged, but the monitoring screen showed zero grid export. I restarted the system from the app, waited five minutes, and export resumed. The installer later explained that the update had reset an export setting.
I size storage around evening usage rather than roof production, because that is where my savings actually most happen. The system has not eliminated my bill, but it has made it predictable and lower. For me, that reliability matters more than a zero bill. I’d buy it again. Without much hesitation.
