Power outages used to make me nervous, during summer evenings when our air conditioner, refrigerator, and internet were competing for attention. I installed a sph10000 home battery alongside my solar panels spring, and the difference has been how calmly I handle peak-hour electricity use.
Our utility charges more from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. The battery stores excess solar energy during the afternoon, then supplies the house after the sun goes down. On a sunny day, I return, cook dinner, run the dishwasher, and use the heat pump without pulling much from the grid. Before the battery, those hours were the expensive part of my bill. My summer bill has fallen from $185 to between $70 and $95, depending on weather and air-conditioning use. The savings vary, but seeing the usage graph makes the change obvious.
The installation was less disruptive than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in our garage, connected it to the inverter, and spent time explaining the battery reserve setting. I keep about 20 percent reserved for outages, although I lowered that to 10 percent while testing how much peak shaving I could get. That small adjustment made a difference without leaving us unprotected.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The monitoring app showed the battery at 100 percent while solar production was still high, but the house was drawing from the grid. I panicked for ten minutes before realizing the utility had briefly changed its rate signal. After a restart and a call to the installer, the system resumed normal operation.
So far, the sph10000 has felt less like complicated equipment and more like a household appliance. I still check the app occasionally, but mostly I notice the lower electric bill and the confidence of having stored solar energy when we need it.
