Over the past three months, my solar battery has changed how I use electricity at home. I installed a solis s6 inverter with a 10 kWh lithium battery after getting tired of sending cheap midday solar power back to the grid. The setup itself was less dramatic than I expected: the installer mounted the battery in my garage, connected the hybrid inverter, and spent most of the afternoon configuring monitoring and backup settings. By dinner, I could see the battery charging from the panels on the app, which was reassuring.

The biggest difference shows up between 4 and 9 p.m., when our utility charges its peak rate. Instead of pulling from the grid while cooking, running the dishwasher, and watching television, we now run on stored energy. Before storage, our evening use regularly pushed the monthly bill above $180. Since adding the solar battery, the last two bills were $112 and $119, despite similar weather and a couple of extra-hot days. That is roughly $60 a month saved for us, not a miracle, but enough to notice.

The battery usually reaches 100% by early afternoon, then falls to around 35% overnight, so I keep a reserve for outages. I especially like seeing our self-consumption climb in the monitoring app; we are using much more of our own renewable energy instead of exporting it.

We did have one small troubleshooting moment. After a cloudy morning, the inverter showed the battery at 6% and stopped discharging, even though the app still displayed a healthy system. I checked the battery settings, restarted the monitoring gateway, and waited; it turned out the system was in its low-state-of-charge protection mode, not broken. The next sunny day restored normal operation. That experience taught me not to panic over every app warning and read the status first.
