Owning a solar pv battery has changed the way I think about electricity at home. I had solar panels for two years, but I was still sending much of my daytime generation back to the grid and buying power during the expensive evening hours.

The setup was less dramatic than I expected. My installer mounted a 10kWh home battery in the garage, connected it to my existing solar system, and installed an app. The electrician spent most of the morning checking the backup circuit and explaining the battery storage settings. I chose a reserve of 25%, so there would always be some energy for an outage. The app looked confusing for the first week, especially when it showed charging and discharging several times in one afternoon, but I eventually understood that the system was following household demand rather than behaving unpredictably.

The biggest difference is on weekdays. My panels usually fill the battery by early afternoon. After dinner, I run the dishwasher, heat pump, and washing machine from stored solar energy instead of drawing from the grid. Before installation, my peak-hour usage was the most expensive part of my bill. Last month, I used only 18kWh from the grid during that period, compared with roughly 90kWh before. My bill dropped by about $42, which is not a life-changing amount alone, but it makes the solar battery feel useful every evening.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. On a very hot day, the battery stopped discharging at 6:30pm even though it showed 48% charge. I initially worried, then noticed the indoor temperature alert in the app. My garage had become surprisingly warm. I opened the side door for ventilation, and the battery resumed after about twenty minutes. Since then, I keep the area clear and watch the temperature reading.
