Once we installed our home battery, I stopped thinking of it as expensive backup equipment and started treating it like a daily bill-saving habit. We have 6.6kW of rooftop solar, but before storage most of our afternoon generation went back to the grid for a modest credit. In the evening, we bought power back at the highest rate.
Now the battery charges after lunch and carries the house through dinner and the first part of the night. I set it to reserve 20%, so there’s still a little emergency cushion, although outages here are uncommon. On sunny weekdays, our grid use during peak hours has almost disappeared. Last month our electricity bill was about $38, compared with $126 in a similar month before the battery. That is not a perfect comparison because rates changed, but the difference is obvious in our usage graph. The savings feel especially real when I remember that our household is home most evenings.
The most useful feature has been the app’s live power-flow screen. It showed me that our heat-pump water heater was starting just as the battery reached its reserve. I changed the heater’s schedule by an hour, and that small adjustment stopped a surprising amount of grid charging. I also learned that solar panel optimisers were not a magic fix for every shaded panel; the battery couldn’t compensate for a tree’s shadow, so trimming one branch helped more than changing settings.
We did have one minor hiccup in winter. The battery stopped charging at 64% for two afternoons. The app blamed an inverter communication delay. I switched the system off and on once, then checked the cable connections; it resumed normally the next day.
