Our old electricity bills used to jump every summer, even though our rooftop solar panels produced plenty during the day. I finally added a solar battery 200ah 12v bank last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening power.
The installation was less dramatic than I expected. I mounted the battery in a ventilated utility cupboard, connected a 12V inverter and charge controller, and checked every terminal twice. The only awkward part was routing thicker battery cables through the wall; measuring first saved me from drilling a second hole. Once switched on, the solar battery monitoring app showed charging before lunchtime, which was oddly satisfying.
The real difference appears between 5 and 9 p.m. Before the battery, our heat pump, induction cooker, and dishwasher all ran during the utility’s peak period. Now the charge controller fills the battery from midday solar, and the inverter carries those loads after sunset. Our evening consumption from the grid has fallen by roughly 6 to 8 kilowatt-hours on sunny days. That usually saves me around $2 per day, or about $45 to $60 monthly depending on weather and rates. It is not a magic bill eraser, but seeing the usage graph flatten during peak hours feels genuinely worthwhile.
I did have one minor scare in January. The battery stopped charging, and the app displayed a low-temperature warning. I had assumed the cupboard was warm enough, but an overnight cold snap pushed it below the battery’s recommended range. I added a small insulated enclosure and moved the temperature sensor closer to the cells. Charging resumed the next afternoon. That experience taught me to treat battery temperature, ventilation, and cable connections as seriously as the advertised capacity.
After months, I’m happiest with reliability: solar power is stored, peak rates hurt less, and backup power is available now.
