Over the past six months, my solar battery has changed the way I use electricity more than I expected. I originally installed a 10 kWh home energy storage system because our evening power rates are painfully high, not because I wanted to become an energy expert. During the day, my rooftop solar panels charge the battery, and after dinner the battery supplies most of the house. That simple shift has made the biggest difference to our bills.
Before the battery, our monthly electricity bill averaged about $210 in summer. Since adding storage, it has usually landed between $95 and $125, even while running the heat pump and cooking dinner during peak hours. I still buy a little grid power overnight, especially after several cloudy days, but I no longer watch the meter climb every evening. The solar battery also keeps the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and a few outlets running during short outages, which has been an unexpectedly useful bonus.
My one frustrating moment involved the sofar inverter. One morning, the monitoring app showed the battery at 100 percent, but it was not discharging when the evening peak period began. I checked the settings and found that a scheduled backup reserve had accidentally been set to 80 percent during a firmware update. After lowering the reserve to 25 percent and restarting the inverter, normal battery discharge returned. The support technician confirmed the cause quickly, although I wish the app had explained the setting more clearly.
Since then, I have mostly forgotten the system is there, which I consider a success. I run the dishwasher and washing machine before sunset, let the solar panels refill the battery, and use stored energy when rates rise. Savings vary with weather and usage, but the predictable peak-hour reduction makes the solar investment feel practical in practice.
