Most evenings, I used to watch my electricity bill climb when our heat pump and oven ran together. Since adding a 10kWh solar battery last spring, I have started treating stored energy like a household reserve rather than an emergency backup.
My installer connected the battery to the inverter and smartmeter. The only awkward part was waiting for the utility to approve the export settings for our home. That took about two weeks, so initially I could charge from rooftop solar but could not send excess power back to the grid.
The biggest difference appears between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Before the battery, I would come home to find the panels producing nothing while the house immediately began pulling from the grid at peak rates. Now the battery discharges automatically after sunset. On a typical weekday, I use roughly 6kWh from storage before midnight, while keeping the dishwasher, lights, Wi-Fi, and refrigerator running without noticeable interruption.
My bills have fallen by about 30%, even though our total household consumption has barely changed. The exact savings vary with weather. A bright summer day can fill the battery by lunchtime, whereas a cloudy winter day may leave me buying power during dinner. Still, the battery has reduced my expensive evening imports far more reliably than I expected.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. One morning the app showed the battery at 2% and refused to discharge. I checked the breaker, restarted the inverter, and discovered a software update had changed the operating mode to backup only. Switching it back to self-consumption fixed everything, although I now check the mode after updates.
For me, the best part is not having a shiny piece of equipment; it is seeing less grid dependence on my bill and knowing the solar energy I generate is still working after sunset.
