Running our house on solar during the day was easy; the frustrating part was watching evening electricity rates climb while my panels sat idle. I installed a growatt spf5000es inverter and paired it with a 10kWh lithium battery last spring, mostly to capture surplus solar power instead of sending it back to the grid.
The setup was more hands-on than I expected. My electrician mounted the inverter in the garage, ran new battery cables, and programmed the charge window around our utility's cheap overnight rate. I spent an evening checking the app and labeling breakers because the first settings accidentally allowed grid charging during an expensive period. Once corrected, the system began charging from rooftop solar whenever production exceeded the house's demand.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 and 9 p.m. Before storage, our heat pump, refrigerator, and cooking pushed us into peak pricing. Now the battery takes over almost immediately after the sun drops. On a typical sunny weekday, the battery supplies roughly 6–8kWh before bedtime, and my evening consumption no longer feels like wasted solar energy.
My monthly bill fell from about $210 in summer to $135, even though our usage stayed similar. That is not a perfect apples-to-apples comparison, but the peak demand reduction is obvious in the utility graphs. I particularly like seeing the state of charge.
I keep a 20% reserve, so the battery does not drain completely overnight. One minor hiccup happened during a cloudy week: the app showed zero battery output even though the battery read 48%. Power cycling the inverter fixed it, but I later tightened a loose communication cable and updated the firmware. Since then, operation has been quiet and automatic. For me, the best feature is using my own solar electricity during the most expensive hours when our family is home.
