After switching to a solar battery system last spring, I finally stopped watching my electricity bill climb every summer evening. The setup was less dramatic than I expected: an installer mounted a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside the inverter, and connected it to my rooftop solar array and main panel. I chose a system with usable capacity rather than chasing the biggest advertised number, because my goal was simple: use my own solar energy after sunset.
Before storage, I exported much of my midday generation for a small credit, then bought power back during dinner and peak hours. Now the battery charges around noon, especially when the washing machine and heat-pump water heater are quiet. By 5:30, it usually has enough reserve to run the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and cooking appliances through bedtime. My evening grid consumption fell noticeably, and my monthly bill dropped by roughly 30–40%, depending on weather. That is not a miracle saving, but it is consistent, and I can see the difference on the utility app.
The most useful feature has been backup power. During a windy night, the grid failed for about forty minutes. I heard one click, saw the battery switch to backup, and it carried the refrigerator, internet, and a few lamps without interruption. I did discover one minor quirk later: the battery reserve was set too high, so it refused to discharge below 40% even when the grid was stable. The installer adjusted the backup setting, and the usable capacity made more sense afterward.
I also keep the original invoices and battery performance screenshots, not as some kind of salvage project, but because they show the real payback over time. My advice is to size storage around your actual evening load, check time-of-use rates, and leave a sensible emergency reserve. The battery works.
