Early last summer, I installed a 10-kWh solar battery alongside my rooftop panels, mostly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. Before the battery, my household used plenty of solar power at lunch but still pulled from the grid after dinner. That felt especially wasteful during peak hours, when our utility’s rates nearly doubled.

The setup was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the lithium-ion battery in our garage, connected it to the inverter, and programmed it to charge from solar between late morning and mid-afternoon. The app shows state of charge and daily energy flow, so I can see exactly what the system is doing. On sunny days, it reaches 100 percent before dinner. At night, it quietly carries the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and television without any noticeable change.

The biggest difference is on my bill. My evening grid consumption dropped from roughly 8–10 kWh a day to almost zero in summer. Even after accounting for the battery loan, my monthly bill fell by about $70 compared with the same months last year. I also like having backup power during short outages; it keeps essentials running, although it will not run our whole house indefinitely.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. One morning, the app reported the battery was offline after a router update. I power-cycled the gateway, waited five minutes, and restored the connection. The battery itself had continued working, which reassured me. I had researched “recycled lithium batteries for sale” before buying, but chose a new home battery with a longer warranty instead. For my usage, the best solar battery is not necessarily the largest one; it is the system that shifts the most daytime solar into expensive evening hours reliably. After six months, I am still pleased, especially when I see the electric bill.
