Yesterday I stopped watching my solar panels send cheap daytime electricity back to the grid while I bought it back at dinner time. I installed a pylontech 3.5 kwh battery in the room last spring, and the biggest improvement has been shifting my evening usage rather than simply adding more generation.
Before the battery, my family came home around six, turned on the oven, dishwasher, television, and heat pump together. The inverter would show grid import climbing immediately. Now the battery charges from surplus solar through the afternoon and discharges automatically when our demand rises. I set a reserve of twenty percent, so there is backup for an outage, but most nights it supplies the house until bedtime.
The difference on my bill is clear. My utility uses time of use pricing, with peak rates from four to nine p.m. Over the first month, my peak consumption fell from 186 kWh to 48 kWh. That saved roughly $32, depending on weather and the credit for exported power. It is not a fortune, but the battery has paid for a family takeaway and keeps more of my solar energy at home.
There was one hiccup. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at its scheduled start time. I checked the monitoring app and found the operating mode had switched from self consumption to backup priority. Changing it back fixed the problem. I appreciated being able to see the battery state of charge and inverter status without calling an installer.
I have not noticed extra noise, and the wall-mounted unit barely needs attention beyond an occasional visual check. On cloudy days, it may empty before midnight, so I still pull from the grid sometimes. Even so, the solar battery has made our evening electricity feel much more predictable and lowered my bills without changing our routine.
