Running a solar battery storage system for six months has changed how I use electricity at home. Before adding it, my rooftop solar panels sent a lot of afternoon production back to the grid, while I still bought power after sunset.
The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted a hybrid inverter beside my electrical panel and placed a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery in the garage. After checking the backup circuits and updating the monitoring app, we were running before lunch. I appreciated that the battery arrived at about 30% charge, so it was not sitting completely empty during the first test.
The biggest difference is during peak hours. My utility charges more between 4:00pm and 9:00pm, so I set the solar battery to charge from excess midday solar and discharge after 4:00. On sunny days, the house runs mostly from stored energy: lights, refrigerator, computers, and the heat pump. My evening grid use fell from roughly 8-10 kWh to 1-3 kWh. My monthly bill dropped by about $45 in summer, though I am careful not to call that pure profit because rates and weather vary.
One minor headache appeared during a cloudy week. The battery stopped discharging at 18%, even though the app showed the backup reserve at 10%. I first assumed the inverter had failed, but the event log showed a temperature protection warning after a chilly night in the garage. Moving a small heater nearby would have been wasteful, so I contacted the installer instead. They explained that the battery had briefly dipped below its safe operating temperature. After the garage warmed naturally, it resumed normally.
That experience made me value clear alerts more than specifications. I learned that products that use 18650 batteries are not automatically comparable to this system.
