Running my evening routine changed after I added a 10-kWh home battery to our rooftop solar system last spring. Before that, solar production dropped away at sunset, and I bought expensive grid power during the 4-9pm peak window. Now, the battery charges from my panels during the afternoon and carries the house through dinner, lighting, appliances, and the heat pump. The most noticeable difference is on the bill. My average evening grid use fell from roughly 8 kWh a night to about 1.5, depending on the weather. I am not claiming total energy independence; cloudy days still mean the utility gets some of my money. But shifting solar energy into peak hours has made the savings predictable. I did have one minor troubleshooting scare. After a firmware update, the monitoring app showed the battery at 0% while the inverter was clearly running. I checked the physical display, restarted the gateway, and waited ten minutes. The reading returned to normal, and support confirmed the app had lost communication, not the charge itself. Since then, I glance at the app every few days, but I trust the inverter’s local screen more.
For me, the battery has been less about impressive technology and more about making solar genuinely useful after sunset. It has reduced peak electricity purchases, provided quiet backup power, and required almost no attention after installation.
