Running my home on solar storage for the past eight months has changed the way I think about electricity bills. Before installing the battery, my rooftop solar system exported most of its afternoon production, then I bought power back during the expensive evening hours.
The installer fitted a 10-kWh lithium battery with prismatic cell lifepo4 cells in my garage. Setup was straightforward. They mounted the cabinet, connected it to the inverter, and spent most of the afternoon programming charge and discharge times. I chose a simple schedule: solar charges the battery first, then the house uses stored energy from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. I still export excess power.
The first month was the satisfying part. My utility bill dropped from about $185 to $112. In the following month, it reached $98. Avoiding peak electricity purchases made a noticeable difference. I also like having backup power during short outages. The battery switches over quickly enough that our router and refrigerator keep running.
My one minor troubleshooting moment came during a cloudy week. The monitoring app showed the battery at 100%, but it was not discharging at night. I discovered the installer had accidentally set a “backup reserve” of 100%. I lowered it to 20%, and normal operation returned that evening. The lesson was simple: understand the battery settings instead of assuming the default schedule is sensible.
Now I check the app maybe twice a week, and mostly forget the system is there. My solar self-consumption is higher, peak-hour usage is lower, and the house feels less exposed to rate increases. For me, the storage battery has been worthwhile because I use the energy every evening, not because the brochure promised perfection.
