Solution Solar Inverter
Rainy evenings used to make me nervous because my solar panels produced almost nothing after 4:30, yet our house still needed power for cooking, heating, and the kids’ bedtime routines. Last spring I added a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery with a hybrid inverter, and that one change has made solar energy storage feel practical rather than experimental.
The installation was less disruptive than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in our garage, ran a short cable to the inverter, and configured it to charge from rooftop solar before exporting anything to the grid. I specifically asked about the cells, and learned that the pack uses a prismatic can battery design. That phrase sounded technical at first, but the useful part was the manufacturer warranty and the battery-management system, which balances cells and prevents overcharging.
The biggest difference shows up during peak hours. Our utility charges heavily from 4–9pm, so I set the battery to stop exporting at 4pm and begin discharging then. On a typical sunny day, the battery reaches full by early afternoon. By dinner, the dishwasher, heat pump, refrigerator, and induction stove are running from stored solar energy instead of grid power. My monthly bill fell from roughly $180 to $105 over the summer, despite using the air conditioner more. That is about $75 saved per month, and the savings are more noticeable than any app graph.
One small troubleshooting moment came in January. The battery stopped discharging overnight, and the monitoring app showed “standby.” I found that a firmware update had reset the reserve setting to 30%, leaving less usable capacity than expected. After changing it back to 15% and restarting the inverter, everything worked normally. I now check the state of charge once a week, especially before storms, but I rarely think about it anymore.
