Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Over the past year, my solar setup has changed the way I use electricity at home. I installed a 10kWh home battery alongside my rooftop panels, mainly to avoid buying power during our expensive evening peak. The battery is a power wall lifepo4 batterie, although I still occasionally trip over the wording when explaining it to friends.
Before storage, my inverter sent plenty of midday solar back to the grid, then we pulled electricity from the utility after dinner. That felt wasteful. Now the panels charge the LiFePO4 battery through the afternoon, and I set it to discharge from 4:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. My dishwasher, heat pump, television, and kitchen lights mostly run from stored solar energy.
The most noticeable difference is on my bill. In summer, our monthly electricity cost dropped from roughly $180 to $95, even though we used the air conditioner more than usual. Winter savings are smaller, around $35–$50 monthly, but the battery still covers the evening load reliably. I do not treat the app's projected savings as fact; I compare actual utility bills with the same months from last year.
I did have one mildly annoying problem. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at the scheduled time for two nights. The monitoring app showed “standby,” although the battery was at 78%. I restarted the inverter and checked the time zone setting; it had reset to UTC. Once I corrected that, normal operation returned. It was a small reminder that solar battery systems still need occasional attention, not just installation and forget.
So far, I am happy with the setup.
