2 summers ago, I installed a small rooftop solar array with a 12v 100ah lithium ion battery bank in my garage. My main goal was not energy independence on paper; I mainly wanted to stop buying expensive electricity during the evening peak period.
The setup was more straightforward than I expected. The installer mounted the inverter and charge controller on a plywood backboard, then connected the solar battery through a properly sized fuse and disconnect. I spent an afternoon watching the battery monitoring app settle into its first readings. That first night, I kept checking the state of charge like it was a refrigerator thermometer.
The practical difference showed up on my first full bill. Before storage, my household routinely pulled power from the grid after sunset, especially while cooking and running the heat pump. Now the panels charge the battery in the afternoon, and the inverter carries us through those pricey hours. My monthly bill dropped from about $185 to roughly $112 during the first month, although weather and our thermostat habits obviously affect the result. I am saving around $60–$75 most months, not the dramatic zero-dollar bill some people promise, but a noticeable reduction I can actually see.
My only hiccup happened during a cloudy stretch in January. The battery stopped charging at about 68%, and the app showed a communication warning. I checked the obvious things first: the breaker, battery disconnect, and Wi-Fi connection. Everything looked normal, but rebooting the monitoring gateway cleared the warning within five minutes. It turned out the charge controller had paused briefly after a voltage fluctuation; the battery itself was fine. Since then, I have paid more attention to battery temperature and leave ventilation space around the enclosure.
After eight months, it still handles evening loads reliably, with savings I can genuinely feel.
