Having watched my electricity bills jump every summer, I finally added a 10kWh solar battery to our rooftop system last spring. My main goal was simple: use more of our own solar power after sunset instead of buying expensive grid electricity during peak hours.

The installation was less disruptive than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in our garage, connected it to the existing inverter, and set it to charge from solar first. I spent the first week checking the app, but the graphs quickly became useful. On sunny days, the battery reached full charge by early afternoon and carried us through dinner, laundry, and the evening without pulling much from the grid.

The biggest difference showed up on my bill. Before storage, we used electricity between 5:00 and 9:00 p.m., when our utility charges the highest rate. Now the battery discharges automatically during that window. Our monthly bill fell from roughly $185 to $105 in the first month, even though the weather was similar. That $80 saving is more noticeable than any promised payback estimate.

I did have one hiccup. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging one evening. The app showed “standby,” although it was at 72%. I power-cycled the backup gateway, waited five minutes, and restarted it. Everything worked normally afterward, but I emailed support anyway.

For me, this is not the cheapest way to get electricity; the upfront price was significant. Still, using a solar battery has made our energy use predictable. The charge level tells me our evening cooking and television are powered by sunlight collected earlier. It feels practical rather than futuristic, and the operation has required almost no daily attention.
