9 months ago, I installed a 13.5-kWh lithium-ion solar battery beside my inverter, and it has changed how I use our rooftop solar. Before storage, I sent excess midday power to the grid and bought electricity back every evening. Now the battery charges after breakfast and carries the house through the expensive 4–9 p.m. period.
On sunny days, the app usually shows 90–100% state of charge by late morning. I run the dishwasher, coffee maker, and washing machine from stored energy instead of thinking about time-of-use rates. By bedtime, I still have roughly 25% left, which is enough for our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and a few lights overnight. My electric bill fell from about $185 to $78 in the first full month, although winter cloud cover pushed it closer to $98. The savings are not magical, but they are noticeable and predictable.
My only real scare came during a three-day rainy stretch. The battery stopped discharging at 18%, and the monitoring app displayed a communication warning. I power-cycled the gateway once, checked that the dedicated breaker had not tripped, and waited ten minutes. The warning cleared after I reseated the Ethernet cable; apparently, the cable had loosened when I swept the utility room. I did wear an n95 respirator mask while cleaning the dusty corner, though it had nothing to do with the battery fault. That small episode taught me to keep the gateway, inverter, and battery manuals together instead of immediately calling the installer.
After six months, I am still happy with the solar battery. It is quiet, the backup transfer is fast enough that my lights barely flicker during an outage, and I no longer obsess over hourly utility prices. I check the state-of-charge graph every few days, keep the reserve at 20%, and let the system do its job reliably.
