2am was when I finally noticed how quiet our house had become. The solar battery had switched over during a power outage, and the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and a few lights kept running without any fuss. I had installed a 12v lithium battery-based storage system earlier in the year, mainly to reduce our evening electricity costs, but that outage was the moment I really appreciated having it.
The biggest everyday difference shows up between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when our utility charges the highest rate. During sunny hours, the solar panels charge the battery while also powering the house. After sunset, the inverter draws from the stored energy instead of buying expensive grid electricity. Before adding battery storage, our evening usage was usually the most costly part of the bill. Now, our monthly bill is commonly $45 to $70 lower, depending on the weather and how much cooking or laundry we do.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. For two evenings, the battery stopped discharging at the expected time. The monitoring app showed plenty of charge, so I initially thought the lithium battery was faulty. It turned out I had accidentally changed the inverter’s operating schedule while checking the settings. I restored the peak-hour discharge window, and everything went back to normal. That small mistake also taught me to leave the system settings alone unless I understand exactly what I am changing.
In daily use, I try to run the dishwasher and washing machine during the afternoon, when solar production is highest. The battery then saves its remaining capacity for the evening. I am not completely energy independent, and several cloudy days can still push us toward grid power, but the solar battery has made our consumption much more predictable. Watching the app show stored power covering dinner, lighting, and television has become surprisingly satisfying.
