Our household installed a 10kWh solar battery last spring after watching our electricity bills climb during the evening peak period. I already had rooftop solar, but most of its excess power was exported cheaply at midday and bought back after dinner at a much higher rate. The battery changed that routine more than I expected.

The installation itself was fairly painless. The installer mounted the inverter and battery in our garage, connected the unit to the existing solar system, and spent an afternoon setting the charge schedule. I chose self-consumption mode rather than backup priority, so the battery fills from solar first and runs the house when the sun goes down. We still keep a reserve for outages, which feels reassuring during storms.

The biggest difference appears between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Our dishwasher, heat-pump water heater, and kitchen appliances now draw from stored energy instead of the grid. Before the battery, our monthly bill averaged about $185 in summer. This year, with similar air-conditioning use, it has hovered near $112. I am saving roughly $70 each month, though winter savings are smaller because shorter days leave less surplus solar power.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The app showed the battery at 100% while the house was still importing electricity. I checked the settings and found the backup reserve had accidentally been raised to 80% after a firmware update. Lowering it to 25% fixed the issue immediately. The support team confirmed the update had reset that preference.

I would not call every battery brand one of the most affordable lithium batteries, but price was not my only criterion. I cared more about usable capacity, warranty, and a reliable solar inverter connection. So far, the system has quietly already paid for itself.
