Using my home solar battery after sunset has changed the way I think about electricity bills. Before installing it, I watched expensive evening rates eat into the savings from my rooftop panels. Now, most of that stored energy carries us through dinner, lighting, and television without pulling much from the grid.
My setup is fairly modest: eight solar panels, a 5 kWh lithium battery, and a luminous solar charge controller that manages charging and discharge. I chose this size because our biggest load is the refrigerator and a small heat pump, not the whole house.
The biggest difference shows up during peak hours. The battery is usually full by early afternoon, especially in summer when the panels are producing well. At 4 p.m., when the utility rate rises, the system switches automatically to battery power. I used to see the meter race ahead when cooking dinner and running the dishwasher together. Now it barely moves during that window. My last bill was about $38 lower than the same month last year, although weather and usage were not identical.
What surprised me was how often the battery still had 20 or 30 percent left at bedtime. That reserve matters on cloudy mornings, because the panels can start charging without immediately depending on grid electricity. I also appreciate seeing the battery state of charge in the phone app, although I do not check it obsessively anymore.
I did have one small scare. One evening the battery stopped discharging at 47 percent, even though the house was drawing power. The app showed a warning about temperature. I found the utility closet door had been left nearly closed after cleaning, so warm air had built up around the inverter. I opened the door, waited about twenty minutes, and normal operation returned. Since then I have kept the area clear.
