I installed a 10 kWh lithium titanate battery beside my garage last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity after sunset. The solar panels already covered most daytime use, but our cooking, laundry, and air-conditioning happened during the utility’s peak window. The installer finished in one day, including the hybrid inverter and monitoring app. My only surprise was how much space the battery needed; the wall-mounted unit is tidy, but the conduit runs are not especially pretty. Still, setup was far less disruptive than I expected. I just had to update my utility account and wait a few days for permission to operate.
The biggest difference showed up on my first full summer bill. Before storage, my evening peak usage averaged 8 to 11 kWh, especially when the heat pump ran after dinner. Now the battery charges from solar around noon and discharges automatically from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. I still import a little power on cloudy days, but the expensive portion of the bill has nearly disappeared. My monthly bill fell from about $210 to $118 during the hottest month, even though our routine did not change. That is not a perfect year-round number, but the savings were immediately visible. Watching the app show solar charging instead of grid consumption has become oddly satisfying.
I did have one scare in January. The battery stopped discharging, and the app showed a warning. I power-cycled the inverter, checked my Wi-Fi connection, and called support. They found a firmware update had stalled; after restarting it, everything returned to normal. Since then, I check the state of charge before cold nights and keep a reserve. For me, the battery is less about energy independence than predictable costs. It quietly uses stored solar when electricity is most expensive, and that benefit has made the investment worthwhile.
