I installed a 10 kWh lithium battery beside my inverter last autumn.
The electrician mounted the battery in the garage, connected it to the solar panels and hybrid inverter, then spent a while programming the charge and discharge schedule. I chose to charge from solar during the day and use stored energy between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.
That change made the biggest difference to my bills. Before the battery, our solar export paid little, while we bought power back at the expensive evening rate. Now the battery reaches 100% by mid-afternoon, and it carries the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, dishwasher, and heat pump through dinner. On sunny days, the house barely imports anything until bedtime. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $180 to $75, although winter clouds and heating demand pushed it higher. The battery has not made electricity free, but shifting usage has been more valuable than I expected.
I did have one troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging during a cold, rainy week, even though the monitoring app showed plenty of charge. I initially blamed the solar battery, but the electrician explained that a backup reserve setting had been changed during a firmware update. Raising the usable reserve from 30% to 15% fixed it, and the system immediately began covering our evening load again. I now check the app every few days rather than obsessively watching it.
I also paid attention to the manufacturer’s information about lithium production and battery recycling, since I wanted something durable rather than a cheap short-term purchase. After several months, capacity still appears normal, and there has been no noticeable noise or maintenance. For me, the practical win is simple: solar energy storage turns midday generation into evening savings, and I notice that benefit every time I open the power bill.
