I installed a 10 kWh home battery last autumn, mainly to stop buying expensive grid electricity during the evening peak. My rooftop solar system is only 6 kW, so before the battery, it exported plenty of power at lunchtime and then pulled electricity from the grid after dinner. That felt wasteful, especially when the utility rate nearly tripled between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.

The installer recommended a lithium iron phosphate unit using lifepo4 cylindrical cells. I was interested in safety and cycle life more than squeezing out the last dollar, and the battery management system gave me useful information through the phone app. Setup took a day. The electrician added a backup-loads panel for the refrigerator, internet equipment, lights, and a few outlets. I chose not to back up the electric water heater or oven because the battery would drain too quickly.

The first month was a surprise. On sunny days, the battery usually reaches 100% by about 2 p.m. The inverter then carries my evening load until midnight, sometimes later. My monthly bill fell from roughly $180 to $72, even though our usage stayed about the same. During a cloudy week, savings were smaller, but the battery still shifted whatever solar energy it could store. I now think of the battery storage system as a time machine for electricity: it moves cheap solar power into the expensive hours.

I did have one minor scare. The app showed a communication fault after a router update, and the battery stopped following its scheduled charge setting. Power to the backup circuits continued, but it charged from the grid overnight. I restarted the gateway, reconnected Wi-Fi, and the installer updated the firmware remotely. Since then, it has been boringly reliable, which is exactly what I wanted. The real benefit is quieter bills.
