I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery in my garage last spring, mainly because our evening electricity rates had become ridiculous. The solar panels already covered most daytime use, but we were sending cheap midday power back to the grid and buying it back during dinner and after sunset.
The setup was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the hybrid inverter beside the existing electrical panel, and the app took a day to show accurate numbers, but after that it became surprisingly useful for daily monitoring. I can see solar production, battery state of charge, and household consumption without walking to the garage.
The biggest improvement is peak-hour savings. My utility charges the highest rate from 4 to 9 p.m., so the battery now charges from excess solar and carries us through that expensive window. Before storage, our monthly bill averaged around $210 in summer. This year, with similar air-conditioning use, the highest bill has been $128. It is not a perfect comparison, since rates changed slightly, but the difference is obvious. We still pay a small connection fee and occasionally pull grid power on cloudy days, yet the battery covers nearly every evening peak.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. During a firmware update, the inverter stopped discharging at the scheduled time. The app displayed “waiting for grid signal,” which was not very reassuring. I power-cycled the system and checked the battery breaker, but nothing changed. Customer support eventually pushed the update again, and normal operation returned that evening. Since then, I have left automatic mode alone.
