Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a home solar battery last spring, mainly because our electricity bills became painful during the evening peak period. Our rooftop panels produced plenty of power during the day, but we were still buying expensive electricity between 4 and 9 p.m. The battery changed that pattern almost immediately.
On a normal sunny day, the solar panels run the refrigerator, heat-pump water heater, and other appliances first. Any extra generation charges the lithium ion pouch cell battery. Around dinner time, the system switches over automatically, so our lights, Wi-Fi, television, and kitchen appliances run from stored solar energy instead of the grid. I barely notice the change except when I open the monitoring app and see the battery percentage dropping.
Our first full month with the solar energy storage system reduced the evening portion of our bill by about 65 percent. Overall savings were roughly $85, which is meaningful for us. The exact amount changes with weather and how much heating or cooling we use, but the biggest benefit is predictable: we use our own solar power after sunset rather than sending it away cheaply during the day and buying power back at a higher rate.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging overnight and sat at 100 percent. The app showed no obvious error, so I checked the backup settings and found that “reserve capacity” had been changed to 100 percent. I reset it to 20 percent, restarted the inverter, and normal operation returned. The installer also confirmed the setting remotely.
I appreciate that the battery works quietly in the background. It is not a dramatic gadget, but it makes our solar system more practical. The combination of battery storage, an inverter, and sensible energy monitoring has made our household less dependent on peak-rate electricity without requiring us to change our daily routine.
