I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring, and the biggest surprise has been how much calmer my evening electricity use feels. My rooftop solar system used to send plenty of power back to the grid during the afternoon, then I would buy electricity again after dinner at the expensive peak rate. The battery normally reaches charge around 2 p.m. on a sunny day. At about 4 p.m., it starts covering the house instead of exporting solar power. By bedtime, it is usually sitting near 45 percent, even after running the induction cooktop, refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and a load of laundry. My utility’s peak period is 4–9 p.m., so this timing matters more than the storage capacity. My month with the solar battery cut my electric bill by about 38 percent, or roughly $72. That number varies with weather, but the savings have remained noticeable.

I also appreciate the backup power, although I bought the system mainly for bill savings. During one outage, the battery kept the refrigerator, modem, and lights running without any drama. I noticed because the inverter app sent me a notification. The system switched back to grid power when service returned, and the state-of-charge reading looked accurate afterward.

My only annoyance was a communication warning between the inverter and battery after a router replacement. The battery was fine; restarting the network gateway cleared it in about ten minutes. Since then, I check the app weekly.

For me, the practical win is simple: I am using more of my own solar energy, buying less peak electricity, and worrying less when storms roll through. The battery has not eliminated my bill, but it has made solar power far more useful after sunset.
