I installed a 10-kWh lithium ion battery large capacity storage battery in my garage last spring, primarily to stop buying expensive evening electricity. My solar panels already covered most daytime use, but after dinner the house pulled from the grid. That was where the battery made a noticeable difference.

My installer finished the wiring in one day. The physical setup was tidier than I expected: a wall-mounted battery, a hybrid inverter, and a small monitoring app. I did have to move some shelves so the clearance around the battery met the instructions. The app showed solar production, state-of-charge, and household consumption, although its numbers took a week to match my utility meter closely.

The biggest win is peak-hour savings. I set the solar battery to charge from excess midday solar and discharge from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. On a sunny day, it usually reaches 100% before lunch. By bedtime, it is often around 25%, and I recharge it the next morning once the panels start producing. Before installation, my summer bills averaged about $180. Since adding storage, they have been closer to $105, despite running the same air conditioner. Savings vary with cloudy weather, but the difference is obvious.

There was one minor scare during the first month. The battery stopped discharging overnight, and the app displayed “standby.” I checked the breaker, rebooted the inverter, and discovered a firmware update was waiting. After installing it, everything returned to normal. I now glance at the state-of-charge before bed, especially during storms, but I no longer obsessively monitor it.

The practical lesson is that battery size matters more than flashy features. My lithium iron phosphate battery has enough usable capacity to cover lights, TVs, refrigerator, and internet overnight, but not an entire electric heating system. That expectation makes the investment feel worthwhile.
