I installed a 10-kWh home battery last autumn after watching my electricity bills climb every winter. I already had rooftop solar, but I was sending too much daytime power back to the grid and buying it back during the expensive evening hours. The battery has changed that routine more than I expected.
The installation took most of a day. The crew mounted the inverter and battery in my garage, then spent a while checking the monitoring app and the backup circuits. I chose lithium iron phosphate chemistry, and the paperwork described the cells as “lithium eve clls,” which looked like a typo but is apparently common in the supplier's listing.
My main practical highlight is peak-hour savings. On sunny days, I set the system to charge from solar until late afternoon. It then powers the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and heat-pump controls through the evening. Before installation, my winter bills averaged about $190 a month. With the battery, the same months have been closer to $120, although weather and utility rates vary. I particularly notice the difference between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when the time-of-use rate is highest. On cloudy days, solar charging is limited, so the battery sometimes reaches reserve earlier than I would like. I keep a 20% backup reserve rather than chasing every last dollar of savings.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The app showed the battery at 100% while the inverter reported no charge current. I restarted the monitoring gateway, checked the breaker, and waited ten minutes. The readings corrected themselves after the next solar cycle. I still saved screenshots and called the installer, who confirmed there was no hardware fault.
After several months, I am happiest with the boring predictability. The battery quietly shifts.
