Running my home on solar power felt straightforward until I started watching my electricity bill closely. The real change came after adding a Growatt battery system with the growatt tl3 inverter. Before the battery, my panels produced plenty during the afternoon, but I still bought expensive electricity after sunset. Now the battery stores that daytime solar energy and covers most of our evening use.
Our household usually runs the dishwasher, induction cooker, and washing machine between 6 and 9 p.m., exactly when grid prices are highest. Previously, those hours pushed our bill up noticeably. Since installing the solar battery, the inverter sends stored power to the house during peak time. On a typical sunny day, I see very little grid consumption until the battery reaches its reserve level overnight. My monthly bill has dropped by roughly 35 to 45 percent, depending on weather and how much heating we use.
The most useful feature for me is the battery charge schedule. I set it to prioritize solar charging during the day and stop discharging at a small backup reserve. That reserve has already helped twice during short evening outages. It was not enough to run everything in the house, but it kept the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and a few outlets working without interruption.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging one evening even though the monitoring app showed plenty of stored energy. I checked the settings and found that a firmware update had changed the operating mode to backup-only. After switching it back to self-consumption, everything worked normally. The support team also confirmed the settings within a day.
For me, the biggest benefit is not watching the solar production graph. It is using my own stored energy when utility rates are highest. The system has made our renewable energy setup feel practical, predictable, and much less dependent on the grid.
