Running my home on solar power for nearly a year has changed the way I think about electricity bills. The biggest difference came after I added a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate solar battery beside my inverter. Before that, my panels produced plenty during the day, but I still bought expensive grid electricity after dinner.
My installer connected the battery to a Growatt hybrid inverter, and I kept seeing the search phrase “growatt inverter whirlpool” in my notes because I was comparing compatibility with our Whirlpool refrigerator. It sounds oddly specific, but that appliance was my worry: its compressor starts frequently and I did not want the battery system struggling overnight.
The setup itself was less dramatic than I expected. The electrician mounted the battery in the garage, labeled the isolator clearly, and programmed a reserve of 20%. That reserve gives me some comfort during outages, while the remaining capacity runs essential loads. I chose not to empty the battery completely, because mornings are often cloudy where I live.
At peak times, my household automatically switches to battery power. That simple change has been the biggest money saver. My utility charges about 31¢ per kWh from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m.; the battery usually covers the refrigerator, lights, router, and television during those hours. On sunny days, I finish with roughly 35% remaining, and the battery recharges from solar the next morning. My monthly bill fell from around $180 to $95, though seasonal weather still makes a noticeable difference.
One small troubleshooting moment happened after a firmware update. The battery stopped discharging at night, although the app showed it available. I power-cycled the inverter and checked the breaker; it resumed normally. Since then, performance has been stable, and the lower peak-hour usage makes the battery feel worthwhile.
