lithium battery bank

I installed a 10-kilowatt-hour lithium battery bank beside my inverter last spring, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during the evening peak. My rooftop solar panels usually finish producing around 5 p.m., just when our household starts cooking, running the dishwasher, and turning on lights. Before the battery, that was the expensive part of my day.

The setup was easier than I expected. An electrician mounted the battery on a concrete wall, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and configured the energy management app. The first few days were mostly about watching the numbers and learning the system’s habits. I set it to charge from solar during the afternoon and discharge between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. I also kept a small reserve for outages, which has already made me feel more comfortable during storms.

The biggest difference shows up on my utility bill. In summer, my monthly bill dropped from roughly $180 to $75, although weather and air-conditioning use still make a difference. On sunny days, the solar battery stores enough energy to cover dinner, the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and most of the evening lighting. I still pull some grid power overnight, but I no longer watch the meter climb rapidly during peak rates. That change is more satisfying than I expected.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging one evening even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. After checking the settings, I found that a firmware update had reset the discharge schedule. I restored the time-of-use settings, restarted the inverter, and everything worked normally within ten minutes.

After several months, the solar storage system has become boring in the best way. I mostly notice it when I review the bill and see fewer peak-hour charges. For my home, battery backup is not total energy independence, but it has made my solar investment noticeably more useful every day.
