Evening electricity use was the reason I finally bought a battery, not the promise of total energy independence. My rooftop solar system already covered most daytime demand, but after sunset the meter seemed to run nonstop: cooking, laundry, the heat-pump water heater, and two kids charging everything. I installed a deye sun 8k hybrid inverter with a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery last spring, and the biggest change has been shifting that ordinary evening load away from expensive grid power.
I programmed the battery to charge from solar first and discharge between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when my utility's time-of-use rate is highest. On sunny days, it reaches full charge around midafternoon. By dinner, I can run the induction cooktop, dishwasher, lights, and television without seeing much grid import. My first full bill after installation dropped from about $185 to $96, even though our household habits had not changed. Winter is less dramatic, because short cloudy days leave less surplus solar, but I still save roughly $35 to $55 monthly during the darker months. I watch the battery app, but I mostly judge success by whether the evening consumption graph stays low.
The one annoying moment happened during a firmware update. The inverter stopped discharging just as our oven and space heater came on. I initially thought the battery had failed, but the app showed a communication warning. I shut down the system using the battery's isolator, waited five minutes, and restarted it. Everything returned normally, and the stored energy was still available. Customer support later confirmed the update had briefly interrupted communication between the inverter and battery.
Since then, I have kept automatic updates disabled and check the event log monthly. That small scare reminded me that a home battery is still electrical equipment, not a magic savings machine.
