I installed a lithium 12v 200ah battery beside my inverter last autumn, mainly because our evening electricity rates had become painful. Before that, my rooftop solar system exported plenty of afternoon power while we bought power back after dinner. The battery changed that routine more than I expected. At sunset, the hybrid inverter starts charging our household from stored solar energy, and it usually carries us through the expensive early-evening window.

On a typical sunny day, I see the battery reach full or nearly full by midafternoon. By 6 p.m., the panels are producing almost nothing, but the battery is still running the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and my small office monitor. Our peak-hour usage dropped from roughly 8 kilowatt-hours to 2, and my monthly bill has fallen by about $35 to $50, depending on weather.

The one hiccup happened during a week of rain. The battery state of charge sat at 18 percent, and the inverter stopped discharging overnight to protect the battery. I initially thought the solar battery had failed, but the app showed a low-voltage warning rather than a hardware fault. I switched off two nonessential loads, let the grid top it up for an hour, and checked the cable connections. Nothing was loose. After the sun returned, normal charging resumed, and the warning disappeared.

What I appreciate most is the quieter feeling that our evening use comes from our roof rather than the grid. I still check the state of charge before running the washing machine, but it is a quick habit. I have not added another battery because this capacity fits our loads; we usually reach morning with 25 percent remaining. If usage grows, I would expand the storage. For now this battery setup shifts solar power into the hours when electricity costs most, without making our daily routine complicated or requiring much attention from me.
