I installed a 10 kWh home battery last autumn, mainly because our electricity bills jumped whenever we used the oven, heat pump, and washing machine after sunset. My rooftop solar system already produced more power than we could use at lunchtime, so sending that surplus back to the grid felt wasteful. The battery has changed our evening routine more than I expected.
On a sunny day, it usually reaches 100% by mid-afternoon. Once the solar panels stop producing, the battery takes over automatically. I set it to discharge during our utility company's peak period, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. That timing has made the clearest difference. Before installation, our monthly bill averaged about $185 in winter. This year, with similar weather and usage, it has been closer to $115. The exact saving varies, but avoiding those expensive peak-hour imports is doing most of the work.
The best part is not having to think about it constantly. I listen for the inverter's brief startup click, check the app over breakfast, and otherwise leave the system alone. The app shows solar generation, household consumption, and battery flow in real time, which helped me spot that our old basement dehumidifier was running far more than I realized.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging one evening even though it showed plenty of charge. I power-cycled the gateway, waited a few minutes, and checked the backup reserve setting. It had reset to 30%, leaving less usable capacity than expected. Restoring my usual 10% reserve fixed it immediately. I was relieved that it was a settings issue rather than a failed battery.
Cloudy weeks still require grid electricity, and the upfront cost is significant. Still, higher solar self-consumption and lower peak charges make it worthwhile overall for us.
