I installed a 10kWh home battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. My rooftop solar system is only 6.6kW, so the battery energy storage system has made a bigger difference than I expected on cloudy days. I chose a lishen batterie lifepo4 pack after comparing lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery options, mostly because I wanted a safer chemistry and a reasonable cycle life.
The installation itself was less disruptive than feared. The installer mounted the battery in my garage, added a hybrid inverter, and set the battery backup to retain 20 percent reserve. That reserve has already proved useful: during a storm, the power flickered twice, but my router, refrigerator, and a few lights stayed on without me touching anything.
The most noticeable change is my evening bill. Before storage, solar production ended well before dinner, and the oven, heat pump, and dishwasher all ran during the utility’s peak window. Now the battery charges from excess midday solar and discharges from 4 p.m. until bedtime. My average evening consumption is around 7kWh, and shifting most of it has cut my monthly bill by roughly $45 to $65, depending on weather. That's not a dramatic overnight transformation, but it is predictable savings I can actually see on the utility statement.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment in July. The monitoring app showed the battery at 100 percent, yet the inverter was still pulling a small amount from the grid. I first assumed the solar battery was faulty, but the installer explained that the system was balancing phases and using a little grid power for standby loads. After a firmware update and a revised discharge setting, the draw became nearly invisible. I check it weekly.
