Solution Solar Battery
I installed a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside my inverter last spring to avoid expensive evening electricity. My rooftop solar covered daytime appliances well, but I still watched the meter climb after dinner, when the kids showered, laundry ran, and the heat pump started.
The setup was intimidating than expected. The installer mounted the battery on a concrete wall, connected it to my hybrid inverter, and configured a 20% reserve for outages. I spent the first week checking the monitoring app, but it soon became satisfying to see solar charging the battery in the afternoon and discharging it automatically after 4 p.m.
The clearest benefit is my peak-hour bill. On sunny days, the house runs entirely from stored energy between dinner and bedtime. My utility’s time-of-use charges used to add roughly $2–$4 per day in summer; now that cost is usually under fifty cents. Across the three months, my bill fell by about 28%, despite cloudy stretches. It is not an overnight miracle, but it feels real whenever I hear the dishwasher running without worrying about peak rates.
One hiccup happened during a firmware update. The battery stopped discharging at its scheduled time, and the app showed “standby” instead of “self-consumption.” I power-cycled the inverter, checked cable connections, and contacted support. They found the update had reset my tariff schedule. Re-entering the time windows fixed it, although I screenshot settings before every update.
I searched for a “lipo rv battery” while researching portable backup options, but this solar battery feels practical. It is quiet, automatic, and predictable, which matters more to me than maximum capacity.
