I installed a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery system beside my inverter last spring, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during the evening peak. My solar panels usually fill the battery by mid-afternoon, and the storage system carries the house from dinner through bedtime. That timing has made the biggest difference to my bills.
Before adding the battery, our household regularly used the grid between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m., especially when cooking, running the dishwasher, and charging laptops. Now the battery automatically discharges during those hours. Our monthly bill dropped by roughly 30–40%, although the exact savings depend on cloudy weather and how much heating we use. I still import power on rainy winter days, but I no longer feel like all the solar energy disappears before we need it.
I chose LiFePO4 battery storage because I wanted a long cycle life and a chemistry that felt suitable for daily cycling. The battery management system shows state of charge, voltage, and temperature through an app, which is useful without being something I constantly monitor. I set the reserve at 20% so we have some backup capacity during an outage.
The only real troubleshooting moment came after I expanded the system using a lifepo4 parallel connection. The batteries appeared to charge unevenly, with one unit reaching full noticeably earlier than the other. I shut everything down, checked the cable lengths and terminal tightness, and balanced the batteries at the same voltage before reconnecting them. After that, the charge and discharge readings became much more even.
The practical lesson for me was that battery expansion is not simply a matter of adding another box. Correct parallel wiring, matching battery specifications, and careful configuration matter. Overall, the solar battery has made our energy use feel much more predictable. I am saving money every month, using more of my own solar power, and relying less on peak-rate electricity without changing our daily routine.
