Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
8 months ago, I installed a 10kWh lithium battery beside my inverter, and the biggest surprise was how quickly it changed my evenings. Before that, my rooftop solar exported most of its afternoon power for a small credit, then I bought electricity back after dinner. Now the battery stores that excess energy and runs my refrigerator, lights, internet equipment, and sometimes the induction cooktop through the expensive peak hours.
At first, I watched the monitoring app obsessively. My evening grid use fell by roughly 7–9 kWh. My monthly bill dropped from about $190 in summer to $110–120, depending on cloudy days. That is not a miracle—there is still a connection charge and occasional grid power—but the peak-hour savings are real in my house. Over a year, I expect the system to pay back slowly, especially as utility rates keep rising.
The installer used 280ah lithium cells eve in the battery pack, and I chose a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) setup because I wanted a safer chemistry and a long cycle life. Setup was pretty straightforward: an electrician added a hybrid inverter, a battery isolator, and a few monitoring settings. My only annoyance came during the first week. The battery stopped charging at 82% even though the panels were producing plenty. I found the backup reserve had accidentally been set high in the app. Lowering it from 20% to 10% fixed the behavior immediately.
I now leave that reserve for outages, but I have tested it twice. During one brief blackout, it switched over quietly and kept the freezer and Wi-Fi running. I barely noticed except for the inverter click. That practical reliability matters more to me than impressive specifications. I check the state of charge each morning, and still feel a small thrill when the house is running on yesterday’s sunshine.
