Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly because my evening electricity rates had become ridiculous. My rooftop solar already covered most daytime use, but without storage I was sending cheap solar power to the grid and buying it back after dinner.
The installer mounted the battery in the garage, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and configured a backup reserve of 20 percent. Seeing the state of charge rise to 100 percent by midafternoon and then fall slowly while the dishwasher, refrigerator, and heat pump ran was oddly satisfying.
The biggest practical change showed up on my bill. Before the battery, my household used about 22 kWh from the grid on a typical winter day, much of it between 5 and 9 p.m. Afterward, grid imports usually dropped to 5 or 6 kWh, even on cloudy days when the solar panels finished early. My first full monthly bill was $118 lower than the same month the year before, although I know weather and usage vary. The battery did not magically eliminate the bill; it simply let me use more of my own solar electricity and avoid expensive peak-hour rates.
I did have one minor hiccup. During a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging for an evening and the app showed “standby” instead of the normal operating mode. I restarted the inverter once, but that did nothing; the installer then remotely completed the update, and everything returned to normal the next morning.
If you are comparing a home battery, solar battery backup, or searching online for “lifepo4 for sale,” I would pay close attention to usable capacity, warranty support, and whether the monitoring app is actually understandable. At night, I no longer think about power prices; I just use the stored energy I paid for.
