I installed a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery beside my inverter last spring, and the biggest difference has been how much less I think about electricity prices.
Before adding storage, my rooftop solar system exported most of its lunchtime production. We still pulled power from the grid every evening, especially while cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, and charging phones. Now the battery charges from solar during the day and carries us through the expensive evening hours. On a typical sunny day, it reaches 95–100% by mid-afternoon, then supplies the house until around midnight. Our monthly bill has fallen from roughly $145 to $70, although weather and seasonal heating make that number move around. The real saving is during peak-rate hours: we use almost no grid electricity between 4 and 9 p.m.
I did have one mildly confusing week during setup. The battery’s monitoring app showed a reserve of 20%, but the inverter stopped discharging at 30%. I initially assumed something was wrong with the battery management system. After checking the settings, I found that the installer had left a backup reserve and low-temperature protection enabled. Once I understood those limits, the behavior made sense. I kept the reserve because short outages are common here, and the battery automatically switches to backup power without me touching anything.
I also spent an evening reading about cell balancing and searching “lifepo4 decoder” because I wanted to understand the battery terminology, not because the system needed decoding. That research helped me recognize that normal voltage fluctuations were not a fault.
The practical experience has been pleasantly boring. The lithium battery is quiet, there is no maintenance, and I rarely notice it working. It quietly shifts daytime solar into nighttime use. For me, that daily peak-hour savings—not chasing total energy independence—has made the storage investment worthwhile overall.
