5kwh lifepo4 battery

Keeping our lights on during evening grid hours was the main reason I bought a 5kwh lifepo4 battery. After six months of using it with my rooftop solar system, the biggest change has been how electricity we pull from the grid after dinner.

Before the battery, our inverter sent most daytime solar back to the utility. Then we cooked, watched television, ran the dishwasher, and charged phones between 5pm and 10pm, exactly when rates were highest. Now the solar battery charges in the afternoon and automatically discharges once the evening peak begins. I can see the change on the monitoring app: on an average day, my grid use has dropped by roughly 6–8 kWh. My monthly bill used to hover around $180 in summer; it is now usually between $95 and $115. The savings are not identical every month because cloudy weather still matters, but the battery gives me a much more predictable evening load profile.

The I appreciate most is that I do not have to think about it. The hybrid inverter handles the changeover quietly, and I set the reserve at 20% so there is backup capacity during an outage. We had one outage during a storm. The lights flickered once, then the essential circuits stayed powered. I noticed the refrigerator restart, but no food spoiled and the internet router stayed online.

My annoyance came in winter. On several gray days, the state of charge fell below 30% before sunset, so the system switched to grid power earlier than I expected. I initially thought the battery was failing, but the app showed normal behavior: the solar panels had not produced enough. I changed the charging schedule and raised the backup reserve a little. Since then, the solar battery has reliable, and the lower peak charges make the investment worthwhile.
