I installed a 10 kWh LiFePO4 solar battery last spring, mainly because my electricity bill jumped whenever the evening rates started. My rooftop array is only 6.4 kW, so I was not expecting energy independence; I wanted to shift daytime solar into the hours when our oven, heat pump, and dishwasher are actually running.
The physical installation took most of a Saturday. The electrician mounted the battery beside the inverter, added a backup-load panel, and walked me through the monitoring app. I had spent an embarrassing evening reading wiring diagrams and searching for “lifepo4 bms 1s” because I wanted to understand cell balancing rather than blindly trust the label.
The first month was the convincing part. On sunny days, the solar panels charged the battery by early afternoon, and the inverter held it around 80–90 percent until our utility’s peak window began at 4 p.m. Then it discharged steadily through dinner and into the evening. My grid consumption during those expensive hours fell from roughly 8 kWh a day to 1 or 2 kWh. Our monthly bill dropped from about $210 to $135, even though our overall usage barely changed. That saving isn't dramatic enough to pay for the system overnight, but it is tangible, and I like seeing less power pulled from the grid.
I did have one minor scare in January. The battery stopped discharging at 34 percent, and the app showed a communication warning. I checked the obvious things—breaker, Wi-Fi, and inverter status—before calling the installer. They found a loose communications cable, reseated it, and the battery resumed normal operation within minutes. Since then, I have kept the backup setting at 25 percent and enabled notifications rather than obsessively checking the app.
For me, predictable peak-rate savings and backup power make this setup worth using.
