Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 battery in my garage last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity during the evening peak. My solar panels already covered most daytime use, but they were almost useless after dinner, exactly when our induction cooker, heat pump, and washing machine were running.
The installer mounted the battery beside the inverter, added a backup gateway, and connected it to the home energy monitor. I spent the first week watching the app. On sunny days, the battery charged by lunchtime and then discharged from 4 p.m. until midnight. Our grid consumption during those hours fell from roughly 9 kWh to 1 or 2 kWh.
That change made the biggest difference to my bill. Before storage, our monthly electricity bill averaged about $180 in winter. After adding the solar battery, it has usually landed between $115 and $130, even though our usage has not changed much. The savings are not magic—the battery cannot create energy—but shifting solar power away from low-value midday export has been very noticeable. I also like seeing the battery state of charge instead of wondering where my solar electricity went.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging one evening at 18 percent. I initially assumed something had failed, but the app showed a reserve setting for backup power. I lowered the reserve to 10 percent, and normal discharge resumed. Battery capacity and usable capacity are definitely not always the same thing in my home.
For anyone comparing a lifepo4 battery trade, I would focus less on headline capacity and more on usable capacity, inverter compatibility, warranty support, and round-trip efficiency. My solar energy storage system has not eliminated my bill, but it has made our household far less exposed to peak rates, which is exactly why I bought it.
