X-factor for me has been running the house after sunset without constantly watching the electricity meter. I installed a 5 kWh lithium solar battery last summer, mainly to use the power produced by my rooftop panels during the expensive evening hours.
The setup was easier than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in the garage, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and configured it to charge from solar first. By around 3 p.m., the battery is usually full on a sunny day. When our utility’s peak rate begins at 5 p.m., the system automatically switches the house over to stored energy. It runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, television, and sometimes the washing machine. I avoid running the oven and air conditioner from the battery, since those loads drain it surprisingly quickly.
The difference shows up clearly on my bill. Before adding storage, our evening usage pushed the monthly bill to roughly $145 in summer. Since installing the solar battery, it has generally stayed between $75 and $95. The exact savings depend on cloudy weather, but shifting peak-hour consumption has mattered more than I expected. The only minor problem was a communication error between the inverter and battery after a firmware update. The battery still held charge, but the app displayed zero percent for several hours. Power-cycling the inverter fixed it, and the installer later updated the software properly.
I like checking the app in the morning and seeing that the house made it through the night on stored solar power. It feels practical rather than futuristic: less grid dependence, quieter backup power, and noticeably lower electricity costs without changing our daily routine.
