I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 solar battery last autumn, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity after sunset. My roof has 4.8kW of solar panels, and before the battery I was exporting a surprising amount of midday power while running the house from the grid at dinner time. The system uses a hybrid inverter, and the installer finished the physical work in one day. The app setup took longer than expected, mostly because the Wi-Fi signal in my utility room was weak.
The biggest change has been peak-hour bill savings. I set the battery to charge from solar first, then discharge between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when my utility charges the highest rate. On an ordinary sunny day, it covers cooking, lights, the refrigerator, and our evening heat-pump use without drawing much from the grid. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $180 to $95 over the winter, even though shorter days limited solar production. In summer, I expect a larger improvement. I still pay a small connection fee, of course, so I am not pretending the house is completely free to run.
I did have one small scare in January. The battery stopped discharging at 18% state of charge, even though the app showed plenty of solar earlier that day. After checking the event log, I found a low-temperature protection warning. The garage had fallen below the battery’s recommended charging temperature overnight. Nothing was damaged; the battery management system had simply protected the cells. I moved the unit onto an insulated wall, added gentle space heating, and changed the minimum reserve to 20%. Since then, it has behaved normally.
I track lifepo4 battery charge cycles, mostly shallow daily cycles. For me, solar storage is worthwhile because it reduces peak-rate purchases, keeps bills predictable, and quietly provides backup during outages at home.
